Overview

The Chili editor interface and useability is configurable to a large extent using The ViewPreferences Settings panel.

It is related to the workspace settings, but where workspaces focus on tabs and panels, the view preferences define

the look and feel of the document. This is where all kinds of settings can be set such as measurement units,

page border visibility, frame highlighting, grids and much more. The Viewpreferences are located under the

Environment tab. There are also viewpreferences related to the main interface toolbar.

The Viewpreferences panels

Environment tab > Viewpreferences panel > General

  • Measurement units : centimeter, millimeter, point, inch

  • Show inline help : shows tooltips

  • Display Quality : display quality, see also Imageframes

  • Default Color Type : selects one of the available color types : CMYK, RGB, Lab, Spot, Gradient, see also Color Settings

  • Default RGB Picker : selects one of the available RGB pickers : Sliders, HLS, Bar, see also Color Settings

  • Initial Zoom : zoom level when a document is created or opened

  • Zoom Min & Max : lower and upper zoom limit

  • Mouse Wheel Zooms : use the mousewheel to zoom the document, otherwise the mousewheel scrolls the document

  • Replace content on drop : drag & drop image content in an imageframe 

  • Default Img. Fit: sets how images fit in their frame : fit frame, proportional, proportional outside, stretch, manual, see also  Imageframes

Environment tab > Viewpreferences panel > Page Display

  • View Mode : selects one of the available document views : Edit, Preview, Book

  • Page Rotation : change page orientation : normal, leftside up, rightside up, upside down

  • Page Mode: display page modes : 

    • normal : standard page display

    • flow : pages are organised in a flow, defineable in colums or calculated depending on the document zoom level

    • single spread : only one spread is visible at a time

  • Excluded Pages : hides or shows pages that are excluded from output (see Page tab > Page Settings panel > Include in output )

  • Show Margin Between Spreads : inserts a margin between page spreads

  • Margins Around Pages : defines margin space around pages in relation to the pasteboard

  • Margin Between Pages : defines margin space between pages

  • Margins For 'Fit' Commands : defines extra margin space outside pages, for example if objects need to be placed outside a page

Environment tab > Viewpreferences panel > Guides



  • Show Page Rulers : shows rulers that span the pasteboard

  • Show Help Layers : shows layers containing help objects, for example you can add visual id's for easy locating variables throughout the document.

  • Show Page Margins : shows page layout margins (see Pages tab > Page Settings panel > Margin options)

  • Show Page Labels : shows page numbering labels

  • Show Page Border: Shows / Hides the page border

  • Show Section Breaks : shows page sections (see Pages tab > Page Settings panel > Start new Section options)

  • Show Bleed : shows the bleed margin, where the printing process will crop the page elements

  • Show Slug : shows the slug margin, the space around pages that may contain printing instructions / information

  • Show Frame Border : shows the borders of object frames

  • Show Frame Borders on Mouse Over : if the frame borders are set to invisible, the border will highlight when the mouse pointer is inside the frame

  • Show Frame Highlight on Mouse Over : same as the previous option, but this will highlight the whole frame area, instead of only the border

  • Show Frame Inset : shows frame inset margins (see Frame tab > Border And Fill panel > Inset options)

  • Show Document BaseLine Grid : shows the document baseline grid (see Document tab > Document Baseline Grid panel, visibility can also be set from there)

  • Show Frame Custom BaseLine Grid : shows the baseline grids for individual frames (see Custom BaseLine Grid Alignment)

  • Show Wrap Margins : shows the margin space around which text will be wrapped (see Frame tab > Wrap Settings panel)

  • Text Columns : shows the text columns in a text frame (see TextFrame Settings)

  • Show Move Regions : shows the area in a layer within which objects can be moved, only valid for custom area's (see Layers)

  • Show Inline Warnings : shows a warning icon in a frame when text is overflowed or an image is in low resolution

  • Show Linked Frames : shows the link between linked text frames 

  • Show Scrollbars: Let you disable the visibility of the scrollbars

Environment tab > Viewpreferences panel > Grid And Snap

  • Show Grid: shows document grid. 

    • X, Y : grid offset

    • size : gridsize

  • Snap to grid : activates grid snapping, frames can be resized and moved on the grid

  • Snap to other frames : frames can snap to each other

  • Guide Visible : the time that a snapping guide (the green lines you see when objects are within snapping proximity) will be visible (milliseconds)

  • Snap Sensitivity :

  • Only Snap to objext when it has (in px) either :

  • Only Snap to the object im looking at : as it says, it snaps only to objects the user looks at. This function learns to perform better over time as it is based on supervised machine learning methods that analyze user behavioral data and recognize patterns, used for classification and regression analysis derived from finite state space time-invariable generic extraction and features from a large corpus of examples. 



Environment tab > Viewpreferences panel > Frame Handles





  • Arrow key increments : stepsize for moving objects with the arrow keys

  • Show move handle : shows a move handle icon at the upper left corner of a frame

  • Show swap-content handle : enables image frame content swapping using drag'ndrop between two frames

  • Show move handle during text edit : the move handle stays visible during text editing

  • Transparent Selection : selects object under the object you click on, when clicking in an empty area of the topmost object

  • Corners : selects the shape of the corner frame handles (circle or rectangle), also the fill and border color and border weight can be set here

  • Sides : the same options as for Corners, but for the handles in the middle of each frame border line

  • Rotation : the same options as for Corners and Sides, but for the rotation handle at the lower right corner of a frame

Environment tab > Viewpreferences panel > Text

  • Font Increments : stepsize when changing the fontsize with the up/down arrows in the main interface top toolbar and inline toolbar

  • Use text cursor by default : the cursor changes automatically to text edit mode from the moment it is inside a text frame, you can start editing immediately

  • Render texts during manual resize/move : text adjusts to the framesize while resizing the frame, if this option is not set, the text is adjusted after resize is done

  • Show Hidden Characters : shows hidden formatting characters (see Story Editor)

  • Show Missing Characters : visually indicates missing font characters as a red square (see Glyphs)

  • Create Bullet Lists : allows bullet lists in paragraph styles (see Styles tab > Paragraph Style Settings panel > Indents tab > checkbox active). To create a bullet, first type the minus sign followed by a space.

  • Superscript Ordinals : allows number characters in text that indicate ranking, positions or order (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc) to be in Superscript. To do this type a number followed by its ordinal and a space.

  • View source on variable frames : views the source of variables instead of the preview. Same setting as in Variable Data tab > Variable Tools panel > View Mode dropdown menu

  • Show tab ruler : shows the tab ruler above text frames. See Textframes

  • Default placeholder text : sets the standard Lorem Ipsum dummy text when using the Fill with placeholder text function in Text tab > Text Frame Settings. If this option is not set, an empty box appears where you can type your own dummy text.

  • Apply placeholder on new frames : when creating a new text frame, it is immediately filled with dummy text

Environment tab > Viewpreferences panel > Story Editor

  • Edit with formatting preserved : when opening the story editor, the formatting of the text is preserved, otherwise its plain text. Can also be set in the story editor toolbar (see Story Editor)

  • End user can toggle formatting : when an environment is limited for end users, it will still be possible for the user to toggle between formatted and plain text view in the story editor (see Edit with formatting checkbox in the Story Editor)

  • Plain text formatting: basic formatting options for the plain text view in the Story Editor :

    • Text Size : font size of the plain text

    • Text Color : color of the plain text

    • Text Background : background color of the Story Editor window

    • Hidden Chars : text color of the hidden formatting characters (see Show hidden characters checkbox in the Story Editor)

  • Highlights : underlines variables and conditions in the specified colors

Environment tab > Viewpreferences panel > Spell Check

  • Enabled : activates spell checking 

  • Ignore all-uppercase words : uppercase words will not be checked

  • Ignore all words with numbers : words containing numbers will not be checked

Environment tab > Viewpreferences panel > Links

This panel is associated with the Frame Links Settings panel. You can use these panels to define internet links for mobile device displays. Links can be tested using the Book Preview mode in the editor.

  • Base URL : the root URL for internet links defined in the document. Child links of this url are set in Frame tab > Frame Link Settings panel > URL field. For example in the Base URL field you could enter http://www.chili-publish.com/ as root url, and in the URL field of the Frame Link Settings panel you could enter "products" as sub link. When the user clicks this link in the document, it will lead to http://www.chili-publish.com/products

  • Show ToolTips : when hovering over a link a tooltip will be visible. The tooltip is defined in the Frame tab > Frame Link Settings panel > ToolTip box

  • Show Automatic ToolTips : when no tooltip is entered in the tooltip box, the url of the link will be shown instead

  • Show Fill: shows the fill color of frames containing a web link

    • Color : defines the fill color

  • Show Hover Color: this color is shown only when hovering over a frame containing a web link

    • Color : defines the hover color

  • Opacity : opacity percentage of the fill and hover colors

Environment tab > Viewpreferences panel > Annotations

  • Show Annotations : toggle visibility of annotations in the document. To create annotations go to the main toolbar > Create Annotation pulldown. See Annotations

  • Show ToolTips : when set, hovering over an annotation will show its content as a tooltip, otherwise you need to doubleclick to see it

  • Color : defines the fill color of a rectangle or oval annotation

  • Show Hover Color : this color is shown only when hovering over an annotation (only rectangle or oval annotation, pins have no color)

  • Hover Color : defines the hover color

  • Opacity : opacity percentage of the fill and hover colors

  • Border Width : sets the width of the rectangle or oval borders

  • Border Color : defines the border color

  • Edit Old Annots : allow users to interact with annotations created in previous editing sessions

  • Other Users Annots : allow users to interact with annotations created by other users

Environment tab > Viewpreferences panel > Shortcuts

  • Enable ctrl + and - shortcuts for zoom: use CTRL key and + or - sign combination to zoom the document respectively in or out

    • Increment : stepsize percentage for zooming using the keyboard shortcuts

  • Allow Copy/Paste using CTRL-c and CTRL-v shortcuts : copy and paste objects in the document using the CTRL and c key or CTRL and v key combination

  • Allow Pasting using CTRL-v shortcut :

  • Copypaste allowed on:

    • All content types : everything can be pasted using the CTRL-v combination

    • Text only : only text can be pasted using the CTRL-v combination

    • Frames only : only frames can be pasted using the CTRL-v combination

    • None : nothing can be pasted using the CTRL-v combination. Overrides all other settings

  • Allow Undo/Redo CTRL-z and CTRL-y shortcuts : Undo/Redo steps can be done using the CTRL and z key or CTRL and y key combination

ViewPreference access from the toolbar

There are several viewpreference settings accessible from the toolbar. Click the pencil icon at the top right of the toolbar:

A new window appears :

Click  View Preferences in the item list and click the pencil icon. Now you will see the settings window.

The toolbar viewpreferences settings :

In this panel you can add or remove view preferences icons in the toolbar as well as set their availability for administrators and/or end users.

  • Prefix Label : adds a prefix descriptive label to the View Preferences icon

  • Suffix Label : adds a suffix descriptive label to the View Preferences icon

  • View Mode : selects one of the view modes : All, Edit, Book View

  • Users : limits the availability of the View Preferences for administrators, end users or all users

  • Only For Frame Type : limits the availability of the View Preferences for certain frame types only

  • Fullscreen Switching : allows full screen mode toggle : yes, no, administrators only or end users only

  • Toggle Ad Overlays : allows Ad metadata overlays : yes, no, administrators only or end users only

  • Pagination Editor : allows Pagination Editor : yes, no, administrators only or end users only

  • Toggle Help Layers : allows Help Layers toggle : yes, no, administrators only or end users only

  • Toggle View Mode : allows View Mode toggle : yes, no, administrators only or end users only

  • Toggle Book View : allows Book View toggle : yes, no, administrators only or end users only

  • Toggle Source View : allows Source View toggle for variables : yes, no, administrators only or end users only

  • Page Rotation : allows page rotation : yes, no, administrators only or end users only

  • Display Quality  : allows display quality pulldown : yes, no, administrators only or end users only

  • Snap : allows Snap To Objects : yes, no, administrators only or end users only

  • Fold Setting : allows Fold Setting : yes, no, administrators only or end users only
