Non-breaking text
Using non-breaking text, strings of text can be configured to not wrap across multiple lines. This gives template builders precise control when formatting text in critical areas, such as address panels, packaging, labels, a call to action, and more.
How to set this up?
Imagine the selected part of the text in the picture below, cannot break under any circumstances.
Step 1: Define a Character Style
Next to the styles you want to set, click the checkbox “No text breaking”.
This will keep all characters together when this style is applied.
Now, with the text selected, in the textframe, apply this newly created CharacterStyle.
The text is now marked as non-breaking. Changing the size of the textframe (manually, scripted or through smart templates) will keep the text together.
Non breaking space!
This feature is compatible with the Non-breaking space as well.
Opening the Story Editor, and enabling the “Show hidden characters” checkbox, will reveal if any Non Breaking spaces are in the text as well.
They will behave similarly to the marked section.
What is the difference in use?
A “normal” non breaking space can be used inline, when you have control over the text you enter.
When reading information from a variable data source, delivered by a customer / external party, it’s not always an option to ask them to provide the non breaking spaces in the data.
Then you can mark the variable placeholders, with the CharacterStyle, and this will serve the same purpose.
